This course explores the role of the stage manager in theatrical production from pre-production through closing documentation.
This course was a great foundational class in terms of learning the art of Stage Managing. Through analyzing techniques and practices, building functional templates, and hearing real-world experience, I feel my understanding of the role of a Stage Manager has broadened significantly.
Tape-Out
This in-class activity was an exercise in learning how to prepare for and complete a floor tape-out for rehearsal. We learned how to plot points, then create a line by connecting those points using tape. While small in scale, this exercise was the first step and allowed the first real tape out I completed to be much smoother!
Mapping the Production Process
In class, we worked together to map out each step of the production process as part of our Production Management unit with the former Writers Theatre production manager Jen Gadda. This exercise was extremely helpful in beginning to understand what it takes to bring a production from an idea to the stage!
Production Book
The stage management class culminated in the assembly of a production book, as if we were preparing to stage manage a show.
